Established as the 498th Bombardment Group, Very Heavy on November 19, 1943, tThe group remained unmanned until it was activated on November 20, 1943. The group was established at Clovis Army Air Field, New Mexico, and assigned to Second Air Force. The 498th Bombardment Group then operated very heavy (B-29 Superfortress) bombardment aircraft against Japan as part of Twentieth Air Force.

Abstract Lt. Col. John R. Buschmann compiled this information about the Boeing B-29 Superfortress, known as "T-Square 54," through personal research and interviews with former crew members. In 2015 these materials, including a short history of the plane written by Lt. Col. Buschmann, were donated to the Museum of Flight in an effort to keep the physical plane and its history housed in one location.

The Museum of Flight's Boeing B-29 Superfortress was of this group and material in this collection reflect the activities of the aircraft during that time period. Many of the charts are annotated for specific missions and some contain identified targets.
